Shake Your Germy Hand? Let Me Think About That

Your dad may have taught you it’s a manly thing to have a firm one.

You may have a softer version for your aunt or grandmother.

But, did you ever consider, despite handshaking’s long history and worldwide practice, that it might not be healthy?

Sure, many who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) abhor the practice. Consider celebrities like Howie Mandel and Howard Stern – they believe the plague lurks in the palms of would-be fans and greeters. They’d rather gargle bleach than shake a hand of a stranger.

But, there are some in the health care field who believe it’s time to ban the practice outright.

That’s right, there are doctors and respected associations of health-care professionals who espouse a ban on handshaking in some settings.

Let’s first consider the history of handshaking, at least recent history... read more

How Germs Spread in Offices and How to Stop Them in Their Tracks

Germs are expensive. Up to 40% of lost work time each year is due to the common cold per one estimate.

Offices are prime places for germs to spread — and it’s not just in the restrooms. Items we touch every day can have alarmingly high levels of bacteria and viruses. Then we carry those germs home to our families.

Even if you are a sole proprietor who works from home, you are not “immune” from concerns. Most likely you visit onsite with clients, attend meetings and go to conferences. Ever attend a conference and come back sick? I rest my case.

Let’s take a look at common places where germs live and how to stop their spread… read more

Soap Alarms being Tested in Restrooms

Procter & Gamble is testing a soap dispenser that emits an audible alarm in order to remind people to wash their hands after using a public toilet.

Procter & Gamble is testing a soap dispenser that emits an audible alarm in order to remind people to wash their hands after using a public toilet, according to the Business Courier.

Statistics about how many germs restroom patrons come in contact with, which were cited in an online ad for the product, might be even more alarming, the article stated.

"Public toilets have more than 3 million germs per square inch, causing diseases like flu, pneumonia and tuberculosis. Despite this, shockingly, one in three people do not wash their hands after using a public toilet — meaning one in three toilet-goers are spreading disease," said the narrator of the ad.

According to the article, the door locks on stalls in public restrooms in some fast-food restaurants, schools and offices in the Philippines were "rigged with pressure sensors, which connected to Safeguard Germ Alarms mounted on walls like standard soap dispensers."

"When a toilet user unlocked the door to exit, it triggered the alarm. To stop the alarm, the person has to press the soap dispenser button. This causes the dispenser to release soap," the narrator added.
